Amahoro Institute

With regards to both Cori's post on the recent Amahoro Gathering in Rwanda and the comments that the emerging church conversation in SA is too 'Western' (a more accurate description than too white, I think), I want to draw your attention to the work of Amahoro Africa - a movement of African Christian leaders who are dreaming and thinking together about what it means to be the emerging church in post-colonial Africa.

The Amahoro network is already well established in East Africa but is still picking up steam in Southern Africa. Although there is a website (www.amahoro-africa.org) and a blog (www.amahoroafrica.blogspot.com) Amahoro recognizes that it is the more Westernized amd middle-class Africans (whatever their colour) that wile away their time on the net. The primary focus is therefore face to face gatherings where 'real' dialogue can take place.

The first gathering of this kind in SA, the Amahoro Institute, will be taking place at the Rocklands Conference Centre in Simonstown, on July 21-24. There is limited place available (40) but the cost is low (R400). If you, or someone you know that doesn't wile away their time here (!) want to join us at this gathering, please contact me at marius@amahoro-africa.org and I will send you more info.

Next year we will be holding the big, annual Amahoro Gathering in Jo'burg on May 5-8. The theme is 'The African Reformation' and if you want more info on that you can also email me.

We still have a long way to go, but something is definitely stirring...

Cool stuff

Sounds great, Marius - I'm not free that week, but I hope you'll be recording some of the sessions, at least? I look forward to seeing how the Amahoro Institute proceeds...we need this kind of thing in SA.
